A New Leash on Leadership
MAF helps BENCHS regroup and refresh
The Blue Earth and Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS) is experiencing a powerful transformation — one made possible in part by a strategic grant from the Mankato Area Foundation (MAF).
Following a period of financial and organizational instability, BENCHS received a much-needed boost through the Foundation’s support. The grant provided expertise through the Consultant in Residency program to review their operations and help the shelter stabilize its leadership and build a more sustainable path forward.
“The support from the MAF came at a critical time,” said Dede Barton, BENCHS’ new executive director. “It allowed us to step back, reassess, and move forward with clarity and confidence. We wouldn’t be where we are today without it.”
As part of this revitalization, one of MAF’s donor advised funds provided support toward a mural that now fills the shelter’s Apollo Room — the space where dogs meet their new families. Created by local artist Dinah Langsjoen, the mural is more than just decoration; it’s a symbol of the organization’s healing, resilience, and new beginnings.
“This mural represents everything we’ve been working toward — hope, renewal, and the deep compassion that drives our mission,” said Barton “It’s a daily reminder of how far we’ve come and the incredible support we’ve received.”
