A donor’s gift helps make room for renewal – tail wags included!

When BENCHS (Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society) set out to reimagine its future, Gene Biewen and Noel Van Tol stepped forward with a gift through their donor advised fund with the Mankato Area Foundation, helping support a mural that would symbolize the shelter’s renewal and transformation.

Their generosity helped bring to life a vibrant, healing work of art by local artist Dinah Langsjoen, now featured in the Apollo Room, where animals meet their new families. The mural doesn’t just brighten the space — it reflects the resilience of the animals, the dedication of the staff and volunteers, and the hope that lives in every adoption story.

“Supporting BENCHS was about more than just giving — it was about helping create a beautiful, art-filled space where healing and new beginnings are possible,” said Van Tol. “We are happy to be part of something that brings joy, comfort, and connection to both animals and people.”
