For many donors, year-end is a natural time to reflect on the causes and organizations they want to support. The Mankato Area Foundation (MAF) can work alongside you and your tax and financial advisors to help you make the most of your philanthropy.
Here are a few year-end giving tips to consider:
Start with Your Goals
Before considering tax strategies, think about what you want your giving to accomplish. Do you want to continue supporting favorite organizations, address emerging community needs, involve family members, or set aside resources for future giving? MAF can help you identify opportunities, learn more about causes you care about, and connect your generosity to community impact.
Consider What You Give
Cash is often the simplest gift, but it may not be the most tax-efficient. Appreciated assets such as publicly traded stock can offer additional tax advantages when donated directly to charity. MAF can also accept more complex “non-cash” assets, including real estate and closely held business interests. If you’re considering a sale of an appreciated asset, start the conversation early to explore available options.
Review Current Tax Rules
Tax law changes may affect your charitable giving strategy. Depending on your situation, approaches such as consolidating multiple years of giving into one year may provide greater tax benefits. Talk with your tax advisor to determine which strategies align with your charitable goals and financial circumstances.
Don’t Forget Your IRA
If you’re age 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA may be a valuable giving tool. QCDs can satisfy required minimum distributions while avoiding federal income tax on the distributed amount. While QCDs cannot be directed to donor-advised funds, they may be used to support other types of charitable funds through MAF.
Start Early!
One of the best year-end giving tips is also the simplest: don’t wait until December! Stock transfers, real estate gifts, and other assets can take time to complete. Starting early gives you and your advisors more flexibility and helps ensure your charitable plans stay on track.
As you make year-end giving decisions, MAF can help coordinate with your CPA, financial advisor, and estate planning attorney to explore options and keep the focus on making a meaningful impact through your generosity.
