Touchdown for Mentorship: McKeowns honor Marcus Williams with Lasting Memories

When Marcus Williams attended his first Minnesota Vikings game, it was a moment of pure joy shared with his mentor, Ryan McKeown. After Marcus’ unexpected passing at just 24, Ryan and his wife, Jill, decided to honor his memory in a meaningful way.

Through their charitable fund with the Mankato Area Foundation, the McKeowns provided tickets to every Vikings home game this past season for mentors and mentees in the Mankato YMCA’s Brother/Sister Program.

For Ryan, it’s a way to share the delight he and Marcus experienced with others. “Marcus was a football fanatic,” Ryan said. “He would’ve really enjoyed knowing others were able to go to Vikings games.”

And for the YMCA, this gift offers mentors and mentees a special opportunity to enjoy a fun outing while strengthening their bond, building trust, and boosting confidence.

“These types of experiences are invaluable,” YMCA Director of Social Responsibility Tom Schueneman said. “They create lasting memories and help empower our mentors in making a significant difference in the lives of the mentee.”

With dozens of area youth still waiting for mentors, the McKeowns hope their gift will inspire more people to get involved with the Brother/Sister Program or contribute to experiences such
as theatre performances, art activities or concerts.

“Sports was something Marcus and I bonded over,” Ryan said. “The more time we spent together, the more he opened up to me. It feels good to be able to honor Marcus by giving back to a program that’s important to us.”
